Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, please I am 24 and I have had irregular flow for some years now. It lasts for about six weeks and it takes some months to come again. There are no fabriods and I treated aneamia too. What may be wrong and what can be done? Is there a cause for alarm with regards to pregnancy?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advise.
You might need to have some tests to find the reason why you are not menstruating regularly. These tests would be: prolactine, TSH, LSH, estradiol, testosterone and vaginal ultrasound to check the ovaries for cysts or other abnormalities. If all the tests are normal than dysfunctional uterine bleeding is the diagnosis and your doctor might prescribe oral contraceptives for 3-6 months to regulate your menstrual cycle.
Pregnancy rates depend on the cause of the irregular menstrual cycles and the tests above will give information on this. Most of the times there are treatments with clomiphen that might stimulate the egg production and most women with irregular bleeding conceive after using this drug that stimulates ovulation.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Kind regards, Antoneta Zotaj, MD
