How Can Irregular Periods With Prolonged Bleeding Be Treated?

I've always had irregular periods because of pcod. I get a period only once in 3 months which lasts for a month. I want to know if the prolonged bleeding is due to thickness of uterine walls. If yes is it safe to stop the bleeding with hormones? Will stopping bleeding lead to fibroid?
