How Can Itching In The Throat And Vomiting Be Treated?

Hi Doctor. My name is Lisa and I m 45 yrs old. I have had an itchy throat since May of this year. It triggers me to cough and the itch can be so intense, that it causes me to vomit. I have been to 2 allergists an ENT and my internal medicine doctor with no results. They have considered allergies, acid reflux, and even whooping cough, but so far no results. I ve taken an array of medications, Singular, zyrtec, levoquin to try and clear up the whooping cough, dymista and flonase to no avail. I currently take Protonix for acid reflux, and seem to do well with it. I went to a speech pathologist this week and she examined my vocal cords, which look normal with no sign of acid reflux damage. The ENT I saw scoped my throat and there are no growths. Do you have any suggestions? I can t get a full nights sleep and I m at wits end! Thanks

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your query, you have itching in the throat and vomiting which is due to bacterial infection leading to strep throat. Acid reflux can also cause such symptoms.

I would suggest you to maintain proper oral hygiene. You should avoid cold carbonated beverages. You should take nasal decongestant sprays, antihistamines and antibiotic combination as infection is present.

Do warm saline gargles 3 to 4 times a day. Take ibuprofen one tablet twice daily. Take soft foods to avoid irritation to the throat. One throat lozenges every 4 hours is helpful.

Drink luke warm water throughout the day as it can provide relief. If symptoms persists, consult an ENT specialist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
