How Can Itchy Bumps Around A Surgical Wound Be Treated?
Post op spine operation, posterior. Wound is well healed after 3 weeks. However, multiple itchy bumps and redness continue to drive patient crazy. Visited Urgent care last night. They gave her Benadryl shot, removed the suture bandage, cleaned the wound site; sent her home. She is taking 25 mg of Benadryl by mouth every four hours for itch. It is not helping and the bumps and itching persist. Are there any other actions to take relief from the itch?
Itchy bumps around the post-operative wound site usually are due to an allergy to antibiotics, and more commonly due to the application of antibiotic ointments for dressing. If antibiotics are use for local application, then they should be stopped. Use cool compresses, and vaseline instead. If needed you may use 1% Hydrocortisone for local application, twice daily.
