How Can Itchy Rashes On The Body Be Treated While On Augmentin?

My husband had to take augmenten for 10 days after breaking ribs and scapula. He has had hives/rash for 3 weeks. Went to doctor and is taking allegra and cortisone cream. Still terrible itiching and scratching all over his body. He is 60 and has taken amoxicillin before. Going to dermatologist...next week. What else can we do?

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Augmentin drug also contains active ingredient Amoxicillin, so it can be probably the allergy to Amoxicillin that is a Penicillin group of drug.

So, the first thing that you should do is to get an allergy test done to rule out the exact cause of the reaction.

In case if the reaction is due to Amoxicillin only, then completely avoid taking it in any form, and consult an Emergency room to get an allergy test done.

You need to get him checked so that the other causes can be ruled out or eliminated that is causing him allergy. So, further treatment can be plan accordingly.

For now, you can consult an Emergency room and a steroid shot can be given to him to reduce the hives. Also doing cool compresses and applying steroid cream can also help in improvement.
