How Can Labia Minora Soreness And Swelling After Childbirth Be Treated?
Hi i had a baby 16 days ago and i had a natural birth. I had a graze off when i gave birth but my right labia minora is really sore and swollen. Ive only just noticed it today and i dont know what it could be and i dont know what i could do to help. Can you help me?
Certainly if you had a scrape on your labia at the birth, this area can get painful and swollen afterwards, especially if it is rubbing on maxi pads and tight clothing. Also many women experience labial swelling after birth if they spend a lot of time sitting because gravity will make the fluid in your body pool in the lowest part. The best way to soothe the area and help the swelling to go down is to avoid sitting for long periods on a hard chair, and applying either an ice pack or warm compress (some women do better with heat, and some prefer ice- 20 minutes on and then 20 minutes off).
If the area stings when you urinate, you can apply petroleum jelly or antibiotic ointment to the area to make it "waterproof" for comfort.
If you do not see improvement in a few days, you may want to contact your delivering provider to examine the area.
I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful.
Best wishes,
Dr. Brown
