How Can Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Be Treated?

My husband has been dealing with what was finally diagnosed with Laryngopharyngeal Reflux since last October. He has had several tests including endoscopy and a barium xray which we have the tests on CD's and the results. He has been taking Prilosec and 20 mg of Pepsid. Even though he has been watching the diet, etc. he is still dealing with the sore throat. He was given Prednisone which did help him while taking it but as soon as he finished his rcommended dosage it returned. He is seeing a specialist (ENT) and has another appt. with him next week to check his progress. But waiting 3 weeks between visits seem to prolong any improvements. We were thinking of making the trip to Mayo's for their input.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
I understand your concern .

His problem is because of gastroesophageal reflux disease with or without H.pylori infection / Zenker's diverticulum..
If H.pylori infection is detected through tissue biopsy, combination of oesophagus need to be started.
Surgical option like tightening of lower oesophageal opening have to be considered if medical management not working .
I recommend you to meet gastroenterologist in that regard.
Higher PPIs like rabeprazole can be tried.
Avoid triggering factors like alcohol, caffeine, hot, spicy food,NSAIDs.
Sleep with head elevation.Have a gap of atleast 3 hours after last meals and before going to bed.
Avoid stress physical and psychological.Minimum 8 hours of sleep recommended.

Hope I answered your query.
Any further query is welcome
