Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a 53 year old female colleague who is a former smoker and now uses a vapor instead. She is experiencing congestion of her lungs when she sleeps. When she awakens she is very congested but as she is up and moving around she get better. But at night it gets worse.... She has had this for over a week
Your friend is experiencing lung congestion recently from one week now, this could be due to an acute respiratory infection, most probably viral.
She is a former smoker, and unfortunately, this category of patients will experience more severe infection.
Advise her to: - increase fluids intake (water, juice, tea) - apply vapour rub on her chest and upper back - take OTC antihistaminic, mucolytic, paracetamol or Ibuprofen at night - aerosol therapy can help - use nasal decongestant
If still congested, should consult with her doctor to rule out pneumonia and treat it adequately if confirmed.
Wish fast recovery.
