How Can Molluscum Contagiosum In A Child Be Treated?

My 5 year old granddaughter has Molluscum contagiosum. Her Dr. said there is nothing that can be done about it. It is very bad behind both knees, red and yellow looking. It does not seem to bother her but it definitely bothers me. It is awful looking. She does have Escema and attends a daycare. What can we do???

Hello,

The key issue here is that she receives the correct diagnosis. Generally, Molluscum contagiosum will just appear as small bumps on the skin. It should not change color from yellow to red or look awful as you describe. It sounds like she might have a different type of infection that needs treatment.

However, if she does have molluscum contagiosum as your doctor says, there are no real proven treatments for it. Topical cryotherapy, imiquimod, salicylic acid, etcetera have worked for some patients.

Ultimately, I do not believe she has a molluscum contagiosum infection if it appears as you describe. It sounds like she needs to see another doctor for a second opinion.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Alexander Underwood
