How Can Myasthenia Gravis Be Treated?

My husband has myasthenia gravis. It is systemic but the worse effects re his eyes (lids close and can t focus. His primary treatment has been prednisone for 3 1/2 year. (From 60mg down to 7. Now at 35). He is just getting worse. He feels weak everyday and just sits in a chair or lies in a bed and sleeps all day and then is up at 3:00 am. Goes to physical therapy but still feeling weak. He has recently been put on Imuran too but we were told it would take 5 months to work. Could that be interacting negatively with the prednisone? What treatments work for patients who do not respond positively to prednisone?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and Welcome to Ask A Doctor service. I have read your question and here is my advice.
Sorry to hear of his sufferings.
Mysthenia gravis is life long disease but now effective treatment are there.
The most important part is to use drugs called neustigmine ( amygra ) I wonder as why he is not on this drug ??? or you forgot to mention ???

if the above does not work ee give steroids ..ie prenislone ..

if not helped by steroids , we can use other immunosuppressive like azothoprine( imuran ), or mycophenolate.
Imuran do not have any bad interaction with prednisolone and are commonly used together .

another thing that help in tretment is removing the thymus ( thymectmy ) that's is removing small gland in the neck .that also help a lot .
Hopes inhave answered your question. I will be glad to answer any further question about this. kind Regards
Dr Rahman
