How Can Myelodysplastic Syndrome Be Treated?

My brother is 41 and diagnosed with Myldispla syndrome a week before Christmas last year . He now has a hemotoma on his backside , constant bleeding from it also from the mouth and nose. He has 2 transfusions a week of bloods and platelets ,he is on pain 24/7 ,hes blast count has just qualified him for a chemo style treatment of a week of injections in the tummy every month. He also has a mental illness which makes it very hard to treat him. He hardly eats ,is frail and exhausted all the time ,he is 41 years old but he is like an 80 year old at times. He is not wanting bone marrow transplant right now cause his mental health is not good , I would do anything in the world to make him well ,but also I need be realistic. So please if he does not get a bone marrow transplant ,how long will he have,in May we were told 3 to 12 months,if he had the bone marrow will it cute him or just prolong things ,apart from my mum he s the only real family I have or he has .

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

MDS prognosis depends on many factor difficult to explain here. Mostly the treatment is supportive like blood and white cell transfusions and antibiotics. Chemotherapy may be needed in some cases as yours. Regarding bone marrow transplant, yes its potentially a cure if done successfully. Specially it is considered for people who are young but is not easy. But can be a cure. So you can discuss this with your doctor as it's not always possible.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr Rahman
