How Can Nasal Congestion Be Treated?

Yes, I'd like to know if there's an OTC for the relief of the nasal conjestion caused by Flomax? Currently, I'm using Neosenephrin when it gets really bad, especially at night. I've been told that the Neosenepherin is not a good idea as I also take blood pressure meds.

Hello,

As you are already taking blood pressure medication, following should be your symptom wise approach:

It could be possible that you are actually suffering from an upper respiratory problem [sinusitis] for which consultation with an ENT physician is essential.

CT scan of the sinuses can help confirm the diagnosis, till then:
- Steam inhalation to help loosen thick mucus.
- Regular nasal rinses.
- Avoid heavy, slimy and acidic food, curd, mustard oil, excess physical exertion, sunlight-dust areas, exposure to strong winds, day sleeping, smoking, potato, green leafy vegetables, and Cold water/food.
- Take old brown rice, soup of moong dal, black grapes, cow’s or goat milk, garlic, lukewarm water to drink, black pepper, dried ginger, honey.

The only OTC [over the counter] decongestant available are phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine, and other forms of decongestant are prescribed drugs thus consult with your primary care provider to exclude any drug interaction with blood pressure medications since they can cause an increase in blood pressure.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Munish Sood
