Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 48-year old daughter has neuropathy; will this ever lessen or be eliminated? She is always walking on fire ! She is diabetic, on insulin for 6 months and planning on gastric bypass. Has lost 80+ pounds within last 8 months by proper diet, and tightened her seat belt by over 4 over our 7-week Road Trip :) (...more like National Lampoon 2016 than Summer Sabbatical 2016 as planned. LOL)
I can understand your concern for your daughter. She has done very well with her weight reduction.
She seems to have diabetic peripheral neuropathy. It is caused by the damage caused to the nerves by high sugars. It may be reversible or atleast controlled to some extent by good diabetic control in some cases. An HbA1c of less than 7 indicates fairly good diabetic control. This should be done every 3 months and maintained at less than 7.
In cases where good diabetic control fails or does not relieve the symptoms to a tolerable level, medicines have to be taken. Those commonly prescribed for diabetic neuropathy include gabapentin, pregabalin and amytrityline. She may need these if all else fails.
Wishing your daughter good health.
Regards, Dr Geeta
