How Can Numbness In The Right Foot Be Treated?

I was running a lot 25 miles per week, until my right foot/ leg started giving me problems. Not in pain but toes seem to be numb, not all the time. As a cause tenseness and muscle in butt also tenses up.. does this make any sense? What is a neuroma and is this a possibility? The discomfort is in the pad of the toes 2-4

Hi,

This is a good news that you don't have pain. But, the numbness of the foot is also an important symptom. As my specialty directly relates to peripheral nervous system, I see patients with similar symptoms very often.

One problem could be due to the irritation of lower lumbar and/or upper sacral nerve roots which can result in paresthesia or numbness of the toes, but as you did not mention a low back pain or gluteal pain, this is a remote possibility.

Another cause which is seen quite frequently in long-distance walkers/runners is the compression of interosseous nerves of the feet.

Especially if your shoes are not specifically designed for long distance walking/running. Don't worry about a neuroma, although it is possible also to have a neuroma in the foot, their major symptom is mostly the pain.

Even if a neuroma exists it is not very important. The first advice is to discontinue running for 3-4 weeks and let your feet heel. Also, search for tender spots over the foot.

If present, a few sessions of physiotherapy (if possible including laser therapy) could help. If your problem persists despite rest after a few days, a specialist should make a more detailed exam.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
