How Can Pain And Inflammation In The Leg Be Treated?

I had an accident a couple of days ago and cut my leg. It looks like it is healing now,... obviously it is very red and still a little painful but it has scabbed over and the skin is beginning to knit together. However, my leg around the cut which is on my knee and a little down towards my foot is sometimes getting hot and a bit red and seems slightly swollen. Can you advise please?

Hello,

Probably there is some infection left. From your story, I am not sure how have you treated your leg after the accident and how deep the wound was. I am guessing that you have taken the routine measures of wound disinfection: wash it with warm water and soap (if possible), or using some pharmacy alcohol to disinfect it later at home, and wrapping it with bandage.

However, it is possible that although such simple measures have been undertaken, the wound was not cleaned completely. Sometimes, it happens that the wound gets covered by new skin but the infection persists under it. In your case it could have happened exactly this. The fact that your leg gets hot, red and slightly swollen in the affected area is an indicator of persisting infection.

Therefore, what you have to do is to visit a doctor, or a nurse or emergency department and let medical staff inspect your leg. In case infection is suspected, they will treat the leg appropriately in order for the wound to really heal.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ervin Toçi
