How Can Pain And Numbness In The Ankle And Knees Be Treated?

I have a fracture to my posterior distal fibula about 4 weeks ago. Foot is numb, cold and have pain that shots up behind the ankle and up to the knee area. I have had two prior tendon and ligament surgeries with no fractures in the past. Have been in a walking boot with WBAT. Last week was told to start trying to walk without boot to see if numbness would get better. Was also given exercises to start. Pain has gotten worse and have needed Norco a couple of times since, where I was only taking ibuprofens and tylenol. Should I just wait it out or do I need to call the physician again?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

This indicates peripheral neuropathy which is a result of damage to your peripheral nerves, often causes weakness, numbness and pain, usually in your hands and feet. It can also affect other areas of your body. Treatment actually depends on the right cause. Most common causes are diabetes, alcoholism, inherited disorders or trauma and medications however, many other causes may be seen so tests are required to identify the right one. Till that you can do some general remedies: Avoid factors that may cause nerve damage, including repetitive motions, cramped positions, exposure to toxic chemicals, smoking and overindulging in alcohol. Also take vitamin D supplements and regulate blood sugar levels.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
