How Can Pain And Swelling In The Thumb Be Treated?

Yesterday, while loading a plate into the dishwasher, my left hand at the wrist/joint at bottom of thumb , became extremely painful and swollen. It is still that way after 24 hours, I have used both ice and heat on it without relief. Is there anything else I can do, the closest ER facility is approx. 1 hour drive from here.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi my dear,

I am sorry for the accident you had.

The swelling and pain at the wrist/joint at bottom of thumb of left hand while loading a plate into the dishwasher is due to possible torsion of the joint.
Avoid applying heat, only cold compresses locally. Try not to move the thumb for a few days.

Take ibuprofen or paracetamol. It should be ok within the next following day.

If after 3-5 days, it will remain still painful and swollen, should go to the nearest ER.
For the moment, just follow my suggestions as above.

Wish fast recovery.
