Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 58 year old male with multi-level degenerative disc disease for about 15 years, which has never required surgery. Last December I slipped on ice and sustained 2 transverse process fractures. Those took quite a while to heal followed by about a month of PT. I have been doing OK but for the last month of so, I have pain in what feels like my right hamstring, just under my knee. It hurts worse after walking for more than about a half hour. I called my doctor about a month ago and without seeing me, he prescribed an anti-inflamatory. Those helped as did compression with an ace bandage, but did not resolve the problem. Is this sciatica from my DDD or have I somehow injured my hamstring? -- Greg G
hi sir,let me first thank you for providing a detailed history of your complaint.it seems to be hamstrings strain.still as you are able to walk for half an hour,it can be classified a mild one or partially recovered.as you have tried all the modalities of conservative management, you can go for surgical management.dont worry only a very minor surgical procedure of releasing the tendon.but before that,a thorough examination of entire limb and spine to rule out other disorders is very essential.other diagnostic modalities like MRI may also be required to arrive at an appropriate diagnosis.so,kindly meet an orthopaedic Ian and discuss about the possible treatment options.until then, you can have analgesics for pain relief.my answer might disappoint you a bit but please consider it as my sincere attempt to explain the importance of examination in person by a specialist for an effective management.any other queries are always welcome.wish you and your family a very happy and healthy new year 2018.thank you.take care.bye.
