How Can Painful Diabetic Neuropathy Be Treated?

Hello, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in November last year and I currently suffer from extreme pain due to diabetic neuropathy. The systems are like shingles (but without the visible signs). I am taking 600mg of lyrica (2 x 150mg in the morning + 2 x 150mg in the night). I am also taking 50mg of Amitriptyline at night to help with the neuropathy pain. The lyrica + amitriptyline do not seem to be having much of an effect as I am still in a lot of pain. Do you have any suggestions on something else I could take ?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The Diabetic neuropathic discomfort you are having is not being relieved by the medications you are already taking, which in itself is of good strength. In such cases, Anodyne therapy is of great help.

Here pads are placed on your feet and legs, and the machine sends deep penetrating monochromatic infra-red rays into the tissues, leading to nerve re-generation. Each sitting is for 40 minutes, and a total of 14 sittings should be taken as one course of treatment. Along with this you must take your medications.

Please keep the skin of your feet and legs soft by using a good skin softner, like Vaseline. Please wear footwear with soft, pressure distributing insoles at all times. Materials like Poron, Silicon, Plastazote, EVA are appropriate. With this management, you would have good relief of symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ajit Kumar Varma
