Hi,

Yes, you can use an antibiotic ointment to treat or prevent an infection from occurring. Most antibiotic ointments are applied twice daily. In addition, a topical and oral analgesic may be helpful, that is topical lidocaine or a similar agent and oral pain killers such as Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Cataflam or Voltaren. If there is no improvement then it would be best to see your doctor for an assessment, oral antibiotics and additional treatment may be needed.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
