How Can Painful Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Be Treated?

I have had TMJ discomfort for six to seven months .. have tried inbuprofen for pain .. the pain has subsided but it is still hard to chew on that side (right side). There are some popping sounds. My dentist recommended getting a fitted mouth guard for night time. It is expensive and I m not sure this would solve my problem. Can you help?

Hello,

You have symptoms of painful temporomandibular joint dysfunction which seems to be due to bruxism and could be the inability of muscles to open mouth wide. Need not to worry. I would suggest you consult the dentist and get mouth guard preparation done so that TMJ problem can minimize. The doctor may also prescribe a muscle relaxant. Do physical therapy of facial muscles. Avoid opening mouth wide. Eat light food. Do warm saline gargles.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
