How Can Painful Ulcers In The Mouth Be Treated?

I have had ulcers in my mouth now since last Monday only on my tongue and inside of my mouth on the left side only. I have 4 to 6 on each area some of which are fairly large. They are quite painful, waking me up and they hurt even when I m not talking or eating. I had a doctor appointment on Thursday and was told to swish with liquid Benadryl. I have but they are not better. They are continuing to erupt or not go away, I m not sure which. I have a fever today of 99 degrees and have taken Advil every day. I have called my doctor back this afternoon twice since 3:00, left a message on their voicemail for the doctor on call hoping they might describe an antiviral. My pharmacy is only open until five today. They are not calling me back.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your symptoms appears to be like viral infection causing cold sores or fever blisters and not canker sores.
So it is advisable to consult an Emergency room and get evaluated and a clinical evaluation and investigations like mouth swab culture and blood test can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..
You can be advised a course of antiviral medication like Acyclovir and apply Valtrex ointment.
For pain gargles with Lidocaine mouthwash can help.
Suck ice pops.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
