Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can Peripheral Edema Be Treated Apart From Using Diuretics And Compression Stockings?
Dr. Rynne, My husband has edema in his legs very bad. We are taking dieritics, wraping with velcro strips, wearing support hose, and doing a blow up legging thing with a electrical pump. It still is serious. My question is, Is there any thing else we can try? I have even done lymph system massages at night. Thank you.
The best way to treat edema is to treat first its cause. Your husband might need tests and examinations to determine the cause of it. Edema in the legs can be due to varicous veins, due to heart problems, due to liver or kidney problems, lymphdrainage problems and in some cases as a side effect of medications and rarely from thyroid problems.
Your husband might need to have a visit with the doctor and some examinations and blood tests to make sure of the cause and then treat accordingly.
I hope I have answered to your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Kind regards,
Antoneta Zotaj General & Family Physician
