How Can Persistent Dry Cough, Which Aggravates At Night, Be Cured?

I m having trouble breathing deeply the last couple of days. I cough when I breathe in deeply but they are dry coughs and it comes on stronger at evening and night time hours. I have been sick with what we think is a mild form of bronchitis for the past 6 days. Ibuprofen has helped me cope through the day and night. I ve been netty potting 4-5 times a day as well as breathing in the steam from boiling vinegar water. Just wondering if there is something else I can do to relieve the cough. Thanks, Rick

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi! Welcome to HealthcareMagic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all, it is sad to know what you had gone through.

Based on the history you have shared, it seems as your symptoms are all explained by acute bronchitis and are part of the whole disease process. For further reassurance chest Xray to rule out pneumonia and blood counts for infection and white cell counts needs to be done.

Meanwhile taking anti histamines like cetrizine or loratidine alongwith analgesics like acetaminophen can be of help. Steam inhalations and warm beverages may help alongwith luke warm saline water gargles.

If fever or other symptoms kick in or aggravate, antibiotics like augmentin or azithromycin may be unavoidable as well as brochodilator syrups like acefyline etc after discussing with your primary doctor. Wishing you a speedy recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.
