How Can Pneumonia Be Treated?

My aunt has been in the hospital for a week (in another state) with pneumonia. She has had brochiecatasis for several years already. She said the doctors have been trying to find the right antibiotics to help fight her lung infection, but that she is probably going home tomorrow and wants me to come help her. She might not be telling me how bad she is. What should I look for and how best can I help her when I get there? I was just there for 2 weeks in February when my uncle (her husband) died of cancer.

Hello,

Pneumonia management depends on the type, severity and clinical presentation with supportive reports. Basic guidelines are

- control of infection with intravenous or oral antibiotic
- bronchodilator medicines to relieve breathing
- use of oxygen as per the need
- cough-relieving agents, anti-inflammatory, steroids as per the requirement
- position preference of semi-reclining state
- deep breathing exercises
- balanced nutritious diet to build the immunity

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
