How Can Prostate Cancer Be Treated?

Doctor- I was told I have a 1/2 to 3/4 prostate cancer and that they will go up my rectum and get a biopsy sample to find how bad the cancer is before they make treatment decisions. Is this sound medical procedure? I am an 82 years old active (golf) man. I have had a melanoma which was removed from my shoulder and hasn t returned, and 2 other less invasive skin cancers, Thank you. Laramie Boyd, Palm Desert, CA

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

First of all it's sad to know what you had been going through lately.
Based on the history you have shared, it's a medical procedure which takes samples through rectum as prostate is in close proximity to that.
Biopsy sample is then reassessed by histopathologists for extent of cellular dysplasia which can tell about presence of cancer cells and type of treatment option.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
