How Can Rheumatic Heart Disease Be Treated?

Hello my sister age is 36. She has been diagnosed with RHD.,calcified aortic valve, AML, and diastolic domING of mitral valve. Grossly dilated left atrium, moderate MS, (MVA 1.2 Sq cm) mild MR , AR, TR, PHT. (PASP 46MM Hg), normal LV systolic function, LVEF 64%. PLZ suggestions whether to operate or OK with medicine. .. Senior cardiologist surgeon advice thanks

Hi,

Treatment of acute rheumatic fever includes antibiotics to treat the strep infection and additional medications to ease the inflammation of the heart and other symptoms.

Usually, aspirin is given in large doses until the joint inflammation goes away; rarely, steroids are needed. Once the acute illness has gone away, patients need to take penicillin, or an equivalent antibiotic, for many years to prevent recurrences.

This is a very important treatment because the risk of heart valve damage increases if rheumatic fever recurs. Valve replacement surgery may be required if your sister's heart valves are functioning poorly and as she is only 36, surgery is required to enhance her quality of life.
