How Can Severe Anxiety Be Treated?

I have been taking Xanax for 20 years, 1/2 in the morning and 1 1/2 at bedtime. I am now in an anxiety pattern I can t break even though my doctor has added 3 more Xanax. What can I do? I can t relax and the pills don t seem to help. I think I need something different, I take Paxil but my doctor doesn t want to change it after 20 years and neither do I. Is there over the counter pill. Help! I , disparate.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Xanax can help to control the symptoms of anxiety but this is not a treatment of anxiety. Paxil is an anti anxiety SSRI drug and has great actions. But if the drug is not working in your case the you can talk with your doctor and discuss about other drugs. Escitalopram or Fluoxetine or Fluvoxamine etc can be used and can help to control the persistent anxiety.
