How Can Severe Back Pain Be Treated?

My husband is on hydrocodone for a very painful back condition. He used to also take clidinium untill the doctor advised against it. However, a pharmacist friend takes cyclobenzaprine for his bad back and suggested it for my husband s. His pain is excruciating. He has had three surgeries that failed to help and also a cortisone shot. What are your opinions? Is there a charge for this? YYYY@YYYY

Hello,

Sorry to hear about your husband having failed surgeries and still having back pain.

I think now you shouldn't try for something indifferent. Let's workout behind his muscular system. As due to surgery there will be the weakness of the muscles and that is the reason the facet joints are getting friction and also the intervertebral disc space is reduced.

Usually, this is a very rare case where the back surgery fails. Because the Surgery was intended to relieve pain and also post-surgery the back rehabilitation program is advised. Now since it's failed and 3 surgeries done, I think muscles are too weak and pain isn't reducing.

I will advise doing icing if your husband is not diabetic. As icing is good for reducing the pain only for diabetics it's not advised. You can use hot water fermentation and that will help reduce muscle spasm. Having an oral supplement of vitamin D3 prescribed by a physician will help the bone to be stronger. Also, start with low-intensity exercises under a guided physiotherapist. Do not force for earlier results but let's take it as a slow and steady improvement which will avoid the pains and aches.

Kindly avoid too much pain killers as this may lead to damage to kidneys and will make other complications in future. Where ever it is possible one should try the conservative management so the body is less damaged. Also, every medicine is symptomatic and will have some long term use side effects. So less medicine and more exercise.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
