How Can Severe Backache Be Treated?

I was wondering if there was an alternative to my 75 year old mother taking Norco every 4 hours for RA pain and Back pain? She has horrible side effects from the 7-5 s . She twitches, gets short of breath and gets confused. This is not like her. She is a very sharp, strong woman. Please offer a different pain pill. Her doctor just ups her dose of the Norco.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

One possibility for such chronic pain would be anticonvulsants such as Pregabalin or Gabapentin. Antidepressants such as Duloxetin are also used for chronic pain. Local injections of steroids and analgesics may also be an option to consider which may provide relief for some weeks/months.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
