How Can Severe Chronic Depression In A 19-year-old Be Treated?

My Granddaughter is depressed and it is on going. She is 19 and has been depressed for about 2 years. She used to be very active with lots of friends when she was younger. She now isolates herself, no longer participates in activities she used to enjoy. It break my heart to see this. I wonder if she may be bipolar ?? Thank you

Hello there I have read through your question and understand your concern. From what you have described your granddaughter is not bipolar but is suffering from depression. Social withdrawal , not enjoying activities that where previously pleasurable are symptoms of depression. It is very important for her to go for counselling. She may be started on an antidepressant for some period to help her cope. Along with Medicines family and friends support is the key to combat depression. I would advise you to make her talk to someone she is very close to do that she can open up about her problem. Depression is a very real disease and should not be ignored. I hope that answers your question. If you have any further questions please feel free to write. Thank you for choosing healthcare magic.
