How Can Severe Cough Be Treated?

My husband has had a cough for at least a week. He’s a pharmacist, so I ought him an expectorant because his cough sounded dry. It is now loose and he’s able to cough up that phlegm, however he’s still coughing. He’s tired and we’ve tried Mucenex DM. We tried hot tea with o drop of thieves oil, etc. any other suggestion would be appreciated. Never mind. Just read about your fee! Good night!

Pulmonologist 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Severe cough should be evaluated for lung diseases like lung infection and bronchitis. So better to take him to pulmonologist and get done clinical examination of respiratory system, chest x ray and PFT (Pulmonary Function Test). Chest x ray is must for the diagnosis of lung infection. PFT is needed for the diagnosis of bronchitis. He may need inhaled bronchodilators, inhaled corticosteroid (ICS), antibiotics etc based on the reports.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
