How Can Severe Earache Be Treated?

When I was a kid I had a rising in my ear and my dad took me up in an airplane and did some barrel rolls and the thing ruptured which caused severe pain. I am now 83 and am just getting over shingles and have a coming and going pain in my right ear, same rising ear, and am hopeful that it is not coming back.
