How Can Severe Esophagitis Be Treated?

My husband had an endoscopy today..they found a severely irritated esophagus, too inflamed to do a biospy. Also a small Hiatial Hernia. The doc has precooked 80mgs of a PPI for 3 weeks..then we return to talk to him I am very concerned.. Is this the correct course of action?
