How Can Severe Halitosis Be Treated?

I have a horrible smell in my mouth at night and it has started to occur during the day . It makes me sick to my stomach and I cannot go back to sleep until I can find a way to stop smelling it. It reminds me of formaldehyde or dead animal smell. I take many medications. Can you help?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of severe halitosis which occurs due to two main reasons. First due to dry mouth which leads to dehydration and second it is due to bacterial infection of oral cavity and debris accumulation. Other possible causes could be acid reflux, diabetes, post nasal drip , sinus and URI.

Need not to worry. Maintain complete oral hygiene. Do brushing and flossing two times a day. Rinse mouth with antimicrobial mouthwash such as Listerine. Avoid tobacco, alcohol consumption. Visit dentist, periodontist once and get scaling and cleaning of teeth done to prevent any microbial accumulation. drink plenty of water. Stop taking spicy and sharp food substances.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Take a good care of your health. Get Well soon.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
