Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I suffer chronic daily migraines. I receive Botox injections for my condition, and take Effexor as a prophylaxis. I ve also tried the entire gambit of blood pressure meds, different seizure meds, mood elevators, vitamin supplements and diets. The only thing that consistently works are triptans. The problem is, I have a migraine almost every day, but am not prescribed enough triptans to cover the 25+ migraines I get per month. Steroids like dexamethasone seem to offer relief but those can t be taken long term. Is it possible for a neurologist to prescribe triptans for every day of the month?
Hi, I understand your concern but it is not advisable to prescribe more than 10 triptans per month. It only leads to migraine exacerbation (intensifying of headache due to a long use of anti-migraine drugs), and sometimes we have to leave patients without treatment so that we can detoxify them from the accumulated drug in the organism causing the intensified pain. So, a Neurologist won't prescribe the 25+ triotans you need every month. I see that you have tried every kind of treatment available out there, and I'm sorry to say that there is nothing more we can do. Wish you better health, and a peace of mind!
