How Can Severe Pain After A Lumbar Decompression Surgery Be Treated?

Hello, I recently had decompression of L4,L5,S1&had a prominent cyst removed that was pressing on the nerve root. It has been 9 Weeks this Thursday. However, I ve continued to have the same pain since before surgery. Dr. gave me Gabapentin to calm the nerves. PA continued to increase to a rather high dose. (With no relief) My question is why would my spine Dr. Refer me to a Neurologist for the pain?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per my surgical experience, there should not be severe pain at 9 weeks period after surgery. There can be possible underlying edema at the operative site with nerve compression or else; which must be evaluated with a repeat MRI of the region after discussing the same with your operating surgeon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
