My Dad is in 10 level (back) pain; he can t take oxycodone or hydrocodone because the side effects of restricted urine flow ... he s at the hospital now, having had a morphine drip, but it is wearing off. We re trying to choose between staying at the hospital or going home with a painkiller. Any advice?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all it's sad to know what your dad had been going through lately. Based on the history you have shared, a neurosurgeon opinion should be sought before discharging from hospital as pain can worsen if it's level 10 at the moment and is only controlled by morphine. An opinion should also be sought to have nerve block as it can be beneficial in such cases.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
