How Can Severe Pain In The Eyes After An Injury Be Treated?
My son was hitting walnut shells with a golf club in the backyard and we think a small piece got in his eye. He is in tremendous pain. We have been flushing with water on and off for 35 minutes but the pain is not subsiding. I don t see anything in his eye. Of course all optometrist offices are closed. What can I do for him and do you suggest taking him to an urgent care? The message on our eye doctors office says to page only in a life threatening eye/vision emergency
Since your son has severe pain in the eyes after getting hit by the walnut shells & the pain is not subsiding; you are suggested to visit ER & get him checked. Yes, it is a medical emergency.
1. It looks like he has corneal injury due to the foreign body. It should have subsided in 15-20 minutes if the injury was minor. Neglect may cause serious eye infection if material remains embedded in the eye.
2. If it is a corneal abrasion it needs to be treated in proper time (within 24 hours). Neglect may complicate to corneal ulcer.
Your son needs medical aid, eye drops & medications.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
