How Can Severe Pain In The Knees Be Treated?

3 weeks ago I injured my knee whilst playing basketball in school. The girls said that I fell on it awkwardly and twisted myself. Since the injury occurred , when I move my knee I feel a grating/grinding sensation and if I touch the area there is a lot of pain and the pain kind of spreads around the knee once I touch it . There was heavy swelling straight after the accident. I m just wondering what you think is wrong with my knee ? And how can I fix it ? Do I need to go to hospital ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Knee pain can be due to ligament rupture, torn cartilage, injury or fracture. Since you are complaining of swelling, you need to visit ER & get an X-ray done, to rule out dislocated knee cap, Patellar tendinitis, torn meniscus or ACL (Anterior cruciate ligament) tearing.

Consult an orthopedic surgeon & get treated at the earliest. In the meantime take Acetaminophen(tylenol) or Naproxen to get relieve from pain. Stay at rest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr Nupur K
