Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
yes, my boyfriend has a hernia under his belly button and it usually is protruding making his belly convexed tightly. although, today when we were shopping he started to feel severe pain in his belly button. upon lifting his shirt it was concave for the 1st time in the almost 3yrs we ve been together. He is in a lot of pain and that is saying something due to the fact of work-related back injuries he has pain management doctor that has been treating him for almost 15 years now with 30 mg oxycodone at least 5 times daily. he also takes gabapentin for the neuropathy in both feet and warfarin due to an episode after knee surgery that caused a large blood clot and his body to be riddled with much more. I am not sure if this is a dangerous situation and do I need to take him to the ER?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
I appreciate your concern, this is suggestive of umbilical hernia and if pain is intensive it may indicate incarceration so he should see ER immediately. Otherwise, it can be treated on elective basis, if the symptoms is appearing after meal then it could be herniation but to rule out the umbilical hernia clinical examination is must here the differential diagnosis matters the great and beside the hernia the condition needs imaging studies because it may not be the hernia.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
