How Can Severe Pressure In The Ear Be Treated?

My 30 year old daughter must board a 7-hour flight in 3 hours but woke up this morning with severe congestion. is there something she can do to avoid a burst eardrum? This flight is to take her to Europe where she is to embark on a cruise with her fiancé and his parents, who are already there. Thanks for any suggestions you can give us!

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your daughter have severe pressure in the ear is because of upper respiratory track infection that has spread to ear through Eustachian tube and causing its dysfunctioning.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis . Doctor may examine ear with otoscope and go for throat swab test. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics like amoxicillin at least for 5 days along with decongestant and anti inflammatory. For now take few preventive measures such as

- Take steam and blow cheeks with nose closed in a light manner.

- Do warm saline gargles.

- Apply warm dry compresses to external ear.

- Avoid touching or pricking ear.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
