Thanks for contacting with your health concern and certain physiological changes which should be kept in mind before treatment are:

1. As the age advances, the nose lengthens and nasal tip begins to droop due to the weakening of the supporting cartilage which causes restriction of nasal airflow, referred to as geriatric rhinitis.

2. Sinus he is suffering from an upper respiratory problem [sinusitis] thus consultation with an ENT physician is essential.

PS. CT scan of the sinuses can help confirm the diagnosis.

3. It could be deduced that his symptoms and pathology has changed into chronic rhinosinusitis [anosmia, headache, earache], so consultation with an otolaryngologist is essential.

PS. As today symptoms flared up suddenly, it could be n acute viral illness [flu] so get a flu shot [high dose vaccine] as recommended by CDC and get a second opinion regarding medical evaluation and treatment. [if any] till then:

- steam inhalation to help loosen thick mucus.
- regular nasal rinses.
- Avoid heavy, slimy and acidic food, curd, mustard oil, excess physical exertion, sunlight-dust areas, exposure to strong winds, day sleeping, smoking, potato, green leafy vegetables. Cold water/food
-Take old brown rice, soup of moong dal, black grapes, cow’s or goat milk, garlic, lukewarm water to drink, black pepper, dried ginger, honey.
