How Can Severe Tooth Pain After A Dental Procedure Be Treated?
I had a cavity filled today - it was between two teeth in the back of my mouth. When the general anethetic wore off ( about 3 hours after the procedure) I began to have horrible throbbing pain. I took several ibuprofen and put ice on but this isn't helping. I called my dentist who said to continue what I was doing and call in a few days. It is so painful I cannot even talk, eat or sleep. Is there something else I should try?
As per your complain tooth pain after a filling is not a normal finding and can only happen if the filling is placed directly over the nerve and it is causing irritation and inflammation of the nerve which causes severe pain..
Taking painkillers is not a permanent resolution and if you are in such a severe pain only continuing with painkillers and ice is not a correct line of treatment as the relief will be temporary till the effect of the anaesthesia weans off..
I would suggest you to consult an Endodontist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like x ray can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..
You can be advised removal of the filling under local anaesthesia followed by root canal treatment for complete relief..
Hope this helps..
Regards.
