Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My wife lately has been experiencing side effects of Levothyroxine, such as extreme tiredness or general weakness and unstable movement/walking, She has been taking levothyroxine .05mg (50mcg) tab for around ten years, but it has been several days that she started to lose pep and appetite. I tried to make an appointment to see the doctor who prescibed this medicine for her, but she seems unavailable or would not respond to my calls or text messages. Should I stop my wife from taking the medicine, withoout consulting her doctor? Thanks you.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It seems that your wife needs a higher dose of Levothyroxine. Symptoms that you have mentioned are more correlated with hypothyroidism than the side effect of the drug.
Herein is my advice:
1) Do not stop the drug. 2) Try to get an appointment with your doctor or another one at the earliest to readjust the dose. 3) Get her TSH (Thyroid-stimulating hormone) level checked at the earliest.
There is nothing to be worried about.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
