How Can Sleeplessness Due To Chronic Pain Be Treated?
I have severe nerve damage, radiculopathy, from spondylolisthesis, had spinal fusion surgery five years ago, I'm not currently taking any narcotic but have a horrible Time sleeping due to the pain and not being able to get comfortable, what would be recommended for me to take for sleep knowing this will be a life time problem?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern. I believe medication for chronic neuropathic pain should be started. The two most used groups are anticonvulsants like Pregabalin or Gabapentin and antidepressants like Amitriptyline. Apart from helping with the pain (which in itself should help sleeping), they also have their own sleep promoting properties as well. So I would discuss their use with your doctor. Pregabalin would be my first choice, but the other two are valid as well.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
