How Can Sore Throat Be Treated?

HI Doctor.I have some azithromycin 250 mg tablets, may I use these for a sore throat? I do not have a fever, headache just a throat issue. Seems like everyone in this area has this problem. Most are taking amox. for relief. Thank you for your time and consideration. Bill

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Azithromycin is an antibiotic and is given in cases of bacterial infection. If your symptoms just started today, I would advise you to take a Paracetamol tablet, drink warm fluids, and do warm saline gargles 3 times a day. It might be a viral infection and should get better with symptomatic treatment.

If the symptoms persist more than 3 days, then you can have a course of antibiotics, under the guidance of your treating physician.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan,
