How Can Stomach Ache In A Toddler Be Treated?

hi. i have a 2 weeks old baby girl and she is having difficulties passing gas and poop.she cries so much when she has to do any of those two n she shows that she is in devastating pain.I am exclusively breast feeding her.what can i do to help my little one?

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern

1. Infants cannot tell what is wrong.It only cries, so examine carefully from head to toe:

i. If every thing looks normal: commonest cause is intestinal colic due to hunger, worms & constipation, in that case:

- feed the baby
- give soap stick to empty the bowels
- carmicide or gripe water: 1ml thrice daily


2. Look for
- bulging fontanelle & neck stiffness to rule out meningitis
- inspect both ear drums carefully with a good torch [refer to E.N.T surgeon, if redness or swelling of ear drum]
- examine the abdomen carefully, for lump, distension, visible peristalsis or tenderness

3. Remember that from third month episodes of crying are common, so:
- hold the baby in upright position, tap on the back for burping
- Bonnisan [Himalaya]: 5-120 drops thrice daily
