How Can Stomach Pain, Nausea And Diarrhea Be Treated?

Hi. I have uti so my Dr. Prescribed me macrobid. Twice per day for ten days. I am on day four and last a few days were quite painful. I have stomach ache, nasua and diarrhoea. I think my uti pained lessened but I ve been to washroom 14 days yesterday alone. So this morning I went to pharmacy and she suggested probiotics. I have taken two of these six hours apart. Ive also had mu antibiotic 3 hrs in between both probiotics. I ve been to wc only 6 times today but I ve noticed a bit of redness in 2 of my stools. I also am drinking lots1 800 463 3533 of cranberry juice to help with my uti so I am wondering if it is causing that. My stomach ache continues. Should I see a Dr again?

Hi,

I am not aware how UTI was diagnosed (fever / dysuria / urine microscopy / urine culture?). Sometimes, we tend to misdiagnose early dysentery as UTI because of overlapping symptoms of fever, abdominal and vomiting. Presence of watery stools with blood staining indicates acute gastro-enteritis- which may be a dysentery or antibiotic induced diarrhea (pseudo membranous enterocolitis). For both the conditions, we need to change the antibiotic and add a probiotic. Kindly review with your doctor. Meanwhile, drink plenty of fluids like ORS solution to prevent dehydration.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK, Pediatrician
