How Can Stomach Upset And Appetite Loss In A Child Be Treated?
my 9 yr old has been complaining of an upset tummy. she has had a dramatic drop in appetite (she normally eats more than me). today (day 3 now) her stools are grey, sink to the bottom of the bowl and she has bright orange oil floating on the top of the water. this has never happened before. she has a healthy diet, we dont eat takeaway and she hasnt had any increases in fat intake. she isnt on any medications. what should we do?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Very likely your child is having a gastroenteritis infection due to the upset stomach and change in bowel movement. If you think she is having blood with the stools, it might be better for her to see a doctor. If you think she is not having blood with stools and she has no fever and is generally active and is drinking well (fluids, and Oral Rehydration Solutions) you can just make sure she rests and continues to drink well for 2-3 days and very likely she will start to feel better soon. If she is not getting better in 2-3 days or she is any worse you will again need to send her to see a doctor.
Hope I have answered your query.
